Coffee Price Trends and Market Dynamics

In April 2025, the coffee market experienced notable fluctuations. The I-CIP, a key benchmark, decreased by 3.5% from the previous month, averaging 335.76 US cents/lb. This decline reflects the broader trend observed across different coffee groups. Colombian Milds and Other Milds saw price decreases of 2.7% and 2.8%, respectively. Similarly, Brazilian Naturals depreciated by 3.6%, and Robustas retracted by 4.4%.

The market’s uncertainty is underscored by a combination of bullish and bearish factors. Bullish factors include concerns over reduced coffee yields in Brazil due to high temperatures and low rainfall, optimism about declining inflation, projected GDP recovery leading to increased demand, and the nature of coffee as a low elasticity commodity. Additionally, market optimism around tariff exemptions and an inverted futures market are contributing to the bullish sentiment.

Conversely, bearish factors such as weakening demand due to potential increases in retail coffee prices from higher customs costs and the greater availability of commercial coffee in destination ports are weighing on the market.

Coffee Exports and Regional Performance

Global green bean exports in March 2025 totaled 11.64 million bags, a slight decrease of 0.9% compared to March 2024. This marks the third month of decline in green bean exports for the 2024/25 coffee year, with the year-to-date volume down by 3.2%.

Despite the overall decline, certain regions and coffee groups showed positive momentum. Colombian Milds exports increased significantly by 25.3%, driven by strong performance in Colombia. Other Milds also saw a 5.9% increase, with Costa Rica, Ethiopia, and Honduras contributing to the growth. However, Brazilian Naturals and Robustas experienced decreases in exports.
